"Save the Mothers is not about foreign doctors, consultants or instructors parachuting into
East Africa to tell people what to do...
It is about partnering with local professionals there, empowering them to spur their fellow citizens on to improve East African lives."

Save the Mothers (STM) was created when Dr. Jean Chamberlain Froese, a Canadian obstetrician/gynecologist from McMaster University, was confronted with mothers in need in Uganda.

As a volunteer with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada and the Association of Obstetricians of Uganda, she discovered many of the causes of maternal death went far beyond medical barriers.

As a result, and in order to create awareness and lasting change, Dr. Chamberlain Froese joined together with a group of Ugandan colleagues (Dr. Florence Mirembe, Dr. Pious Okong, and Dr. Olive Sentumbwe-Mugisa) and founded Save the Mothers.

Save the Mothers promotes maternal health in the developing world through education, public awareness and advocacy. Based in Uganda and North America, Save The Mothers is part of a global movement to improve the health of mothers and babies.

masters in public health leadership

In partnership with Uganda Christian University, the MPHL equips professionals from multiple fields - members of Parliament, journalists, teachers, clergy, military personnel, lawyers and entrepreneurs - to make a difference in their own spheres of influence, giving them the tools and skills they need to become strong advocates for change, and to build new societal infrastructures.

Mother-baby friendly hospital initiative

STM works with Ugandan hospitals to help them become equipped to provide the care mothers need.

From simple changes, such as adding curtains in delivery rooms, to replacing 40-year-old operating room beds, the Baby Friendly Initiative is also bringing social change in hospitals where mothers are treated with respect and dignity.

Where will your donations go?

STM Student Scholarships

Most of our students cannot afford the cost of travel, accommodation and tuition. Your investment equips them to learn and spread life-saving information in their communities across East Africa.

COVID-19
Relief

During the COVID-19 lockdown, Uganda is reporting worsening maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality. Your donations help provide needed emergency surgeries, life-saving care and PPE for local health care workers.

Community Outreach

STM students and volunteers make trips throughout the semester, to reach out to rural communities, schools and medical clinics.

Providing quality training

Our East African academic faculty make sacrifices to give their time and expertise to our program. Their wages are below industry standards in Uganda.
